The short answer
AI agents are worth starting now because Microsoft has put them inside the Dynamics 365 applications you already run, with the controls a finance or service leader needs, and because the first processes are cheap to test. Waiting does not remove the work. It leaves your people doing it by hand while competitors learn what works.
What has changed
- Agents are in the products. Microsoft now ships agents for sales, customer service, finance, supply chain, project operations, field service and Business Central. You do not have to build a platform before you try one.
- They act, not only answer. Earlier assistants suggested text. An agent can read an email, find the purchase order, match an invoice or draft a reply, and then hand the result to a person to approve.
- Governance has arrived. Permissions, monitoring and audit trails for agents are part of the offering, which is what lets a controller or a risk officer say yes.
- Your data foundation is the constraint, not the technology. The agents work on the data in Dynamics 365. Where that data is clean, the pilot is quick.
What waiting costs
- Hours. High-volume work such as matching, chasing, keying and triage still takes the same staff time every month.
- Speed. Customers and suppliers get faster responses from organisations that have automated the first step.
- Learning. Agents need rules, review habits and trust. Teams that start with a small pilot learn those in a quarter. Teams that start later learn them later.
What not to expect
Agents do not replace your finance or service teams, and they are not equally good at everything. They are strongest where work is high in volume, rule-based and reviewable. They need clean data, a named owner and a person approving the step that matters. Availability and licensing differ by agent, market and release wave, so check the current position for each before you plan around it.
How to start without a large commitment
Start with a readiness assessment, choose two or three processes where an agent earns its keep, run them with human approval and expand only against measured results. The guide on building an AI agent proof of concept sets out the steps. To discuss yours, book a consultation.
Frequently asked questions
Why should we start with AI agents now?
Microsoft now provides agents inside Dynamics 365 for sales, service, finance, supply chain, project operations, field service and Business Central, with governance controls. The first processes are inexpensive to test, and teams learn from running them.
Do AI agents replace finance and service staff?
No. They take over repetitive steps such as matching, keying, chasing and first drafts, while people review exceptions and decide.
What is the first step?
A readiness assessment of your data, controls and processes, followed by a pilot on two or three processes with human approval.
